The Democrats have a majority in the House and may well impeach Trump. However, they will need a two thirds vote in the Senate to convict Trump and remove him from office. The Republicans have a slight majority in the Senate, so this seems very unlikely.
The Ukrainian scandal involves both Trump and Joe Biden. Trump has so many scandals already that one more will merely distract voters from his other scandals. Joe Biden's record is not perfect but it is much cleaner, so this will do him real damage.
The scandal may give the Democratic nomination to Elizabeth Warren. The polls have suggested she will be much easier to beat in the general election, and by then this scandal will just be one among many for Trump.
So Trump's TV comments might be a somewhat risky but still overall reasonable strategy.
Given Trump's success in many different fields it seem reasonable to guess that Trump is crazy like a fox. On the other hand, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.
